The Scorpion King (2002)

Warning, minor plot points revealed!

Yes, that's right, I went to see The Scorpion King and I liked it, so there!  It's a fun movie.  This prequel to The Mummy Returns answers at least half the questions that I had about the other villain in that movie known as The Scorpion King.  Hopefully the sequel to this prequel will finish the story some day.

The movie begins with the assassin Mathayus (Dwayne Johnson a.k.a. The Rock) and his brothers being hired by the remaining tribe leaders of the world to kill the sorcerer of Memnon The Conqueror, this sorcerer being the secret weapon of his world domination campaign.  Mathayus and his brothers head over to Gomorrah to take out  the sorcerer.  Along the way they pick up a funny little thief to provide comic relief.  The brothers  find out as soon as they get to town that they have been betrayed and are immediately killed, except for Mathayus who escapes.  He finds the sorcerer to be a super hot sorceress and decides to kidnap her instead of kill her.  Then there's lots more battles and fighting and in the end....He's king!

The only disappointment came at the end.  We never really get to see his transformation into the villainous Scorpion King.  I was certain that the final battle would result in the remaining tribes being all but slaughtered and Mathayus being beaten to the brink of death where he asks the sorceress to resurrect him as the supernatural being known as The Scorpion King!  Then he could raise his army of demons against Memnon and his armies, destroy them all, and the remaining survivors rebuild a new society or something.  That would have been better, but perhaps they're just saving that for the sequel.

If you miss the days of Conan The Barbarian, reminisce about great shows like Hercules and Xena, and were one of the lucky few to see Kull the Conqueror, then this is the movie for you!
