Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle (2003)

Ebert:1/2 Rolling Stone: TV Guide:1/2

Warning, minor plot points revealed!

Charlie's Angels 2 does just what a good sequel should.  It takes all the best things about the first film and ramps them up to the nth degree.  More is better.  More sexy costumes, crazy wild impossible stunts, and best of all Demi Moore.  I liked the first Charlie's Angels movie so I knew I was going to like this one as well.  I actually liked it better.  It's a super fun summer popcorn flick.

The story this time has the Angels trying to locate two stolen secret decoder rings that have the Witness Protection Program participants real identities stored on them.  Former Angel Madison Lee has stolen the rings and is preparing to sell them to the highest bidder.

Of course the story is not really that important.  What is important is that we get to see the Angels engaged in all kinds of sexy crazy wacky stunts.  We get to see them riding surfboards, supercross bikes, cool cars, a downhill street luge and all, sorts of other neat vehicles.  We also get to see them doing more Matrix style slow motion wire kung fu.  And all the while we get to see them dressed in all kinds of funny and sexy outfits.

The special effects in the movie are excellent.  What the Charlie's Angels movies do best is shamelessly steal stunts and effects from other movies.  Most noticeably The Matrix, The Fast and the Furious, XXX and recent James Bond Films like Die Another Day.  I'm not mentioning this because I disapprove.  I love watching this type of action and when it's hot chicks doing it that's all the better!

And the Angels are, if nothing else, hot.  You know you have a sexy bunch of women when Drew Barrymore is the least attractive of the lot.  The actors are all great and appear to have had a blast making the film.  Drew Barrymore is cute as the rocker hard-case of the bunch Dylan.  Her past comes back to haunt her as she is one of the people listed on the Witness Protection list under her former name Helen Zass.  The other Angels have a great time making fun of that name for a couple of minutes.  Cameron Diaz is the goofy but super smart Natalie.  She's still seeing her boyfriend Pete from the last film played by Luke Wilson who is once again unfortunately underused.  Finally my favorite Angel Lucy Liu is back as Alex Munday.  She's also still with her boyfriend Jason played by Matt LeBlanc (or as I call him, Joey) who is staring in the sequel to the action flick he was making in the first Charlie's Angels movie.  We also get to meet Alex's dad played by John Cleese (for some reason.)  This was a big surprise and a huge disappointment.  His talents are wasted and the only thing I can guess is that he wandered too close to the set one day and got suckered into doing a few scenes.

Also returning is hired mercenary Crispin Glover as The Creepy Thin Man.  He doesn't have a huge role but we do get to see a brief history of his life as a child which is a really fun part of the film.  Bosley is played by Bernie Mac this time instead of Bill Murray.  He does a fine job as the brother of Bosley who is also named Bosley but honestly replacing Bill Murray is no small task and Mac doesn't quite fit the part.

Other cameos in the film are singer Pink, that kid from the movie Holes and The Olsen twins.  Robert Patrick (Terminator 2 and the replacement for Mulder on The X-Files) also has a small role as Madison Lee's henchman.  We also get to see former TV Angel Jaclyn Smith reprise her role as Kelly Garrett.  And, of course John Forsythe as the voice of Charlie.  Also in an uncredited role at the beginning of the film is Bruce Willis.  His character dies instantly but it is neat that he was in the movie.

And finally speaking of Bruce Willis, the former Mrs. Bruce Willis - Demi Moore, has become a sexy national treasure.  She looks better than she ever has and easily holds her own with the younger Barrymore and Liu as well as standing side by side in a tiny bikini next to Cameron Diaz.  She's luscuiously evil as the fallen Angel Madison Lee and absolutely steals every scene she appears in.

There are better movies out right now and some other really good ones opening in the next few weeks but if you wanna kill some time this week go ahead and watch Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle.  It's a fun movie and if you liked the first you won't be disappointed.
